A Case-Study for a UAV Operator Environment Based on Mixed Reality

Room B4

How can a consumer technology like VR/AR “rolled out” in a traditional and in some aspects even conservative company like Airbus Defence and Space? Beside of answering this question, a case-study shall be presented in which Mixed Reality is used in order to provide an enhanced and very isolated environment for a UAV operator. Therefore, a Virtual Reality headset is combined with hand tracking to put the UAV operator in a fully immersive environment providing just the live feed of the drone and the necessary controls. Currently the controls are based on an Android system which is duplicated in VR. In addition, if the UAV operators requires this, the real surroundings are integrated into the view by the headset’s cameras and thereby enable a mixed reality view.
